I'd look into the PCI compatibility of your 2408 system with the G5. If 
you're talking about the latest revision dual 1.8, then you may be in 
luck as it's classic PCI, similar to the G4 systems.

As for the Glyph firewire solution, unless you need RAID or 
hot-swappable drives, there are cheaper cases out there from other 
reputable manufacturers such as Lacie or ADS Tech. A lot of money can 
be saved by buying a case without a hard drive and adding it yourself.

I run a Powerbook as my main mac. I also run Microsoft Office, Toast, 
Virtual PC, Photoshop, and several other apps. I never have to worry 
about messing up my audio setup as OS X is not as picky as OS 9 was 
with configuration (i.e. loading system extensions, etc).

I use a MOTU 828 firewire device with Logic on my G4. I have had zero 
problems over the past few years due to this combo. I'm unsure of what 
the PCI performance has been, so you should investigate that.
