Not sure what the specific cause of your problem is -- might be anything from a simple corrupted preferences file to a serious hardware failure. However, I would start with the 'usual' troubleshoot-stuff for OS9. That is: rebuild the desktop (restart, and press Command-Option just before the Finder appears), zap PRAM (hold Command-Option-P-R while booting the Mac). If that doesn't work, trash the Finder preferences, trash the Monitors preferences. However, the fact that the screen stays black even during startup suggest some sort of hardware problem.
