Logic 7 -> ProBand ??

Logic 7 -> ProBand ??

2004-09-21 by mellowyazz

I've been noticing some interest in Logic 7 by some LUG members
recently and thought folks might find it interesting to learn that
Apple recently applied for trademark rights for the name 'ProBand' as
well as some other names for future products. This seems like a logical
name for GarageBand's future big brother, (the former emagic Logic??).
It seems like this will probably be the case. ... Or will there be a
third 'middle of the road' product between the two?

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Apple has done just that with their
video editing series:

iMovie --> Final Cut Express --> Final Cut Pro.

Hmmm... Let's see, maybe...

    GarageBand  -> Can'tLeaveMyDayJobBand -> ProBand

It seems like this is the way things are going. It should be business as usual (same thing
happened with iMac G5 for the consumer, G5 tower for pros). The only down side I can see
to this is loss of the name. It sounds silly but there is so much history in it. In all honesty, I
wouldn't want to switch from Logic to "ProBand" (what a lame name) independant of a few
minor advancements. Damn have I been conditioned eh. :)

Although it's hard to complain because Apple seems to have done great things with
making their professional level products being extremely high quality. It's nice to see a
split between consusmer and professional rather than putting out a medeocre 'prosumer'
product to try and satisfy everyone.

Never the less, it should be interresting.

I agree that Pro Band is a pretty lame name, but personally, I think Logic
is even worse, almost the opposite of "creative".

What about Contra Band? OK, I admit it, now I'm being stupid.

Seriously though, I think Apple should have run a naming competition on this
list.

Re: [L-OT] MacOS9.2.2 startup problem

2004-11-03 by Bob Lowen

Hi all,

I am having a strange problem lately. G4 MDD twin proc 1.25GHz with
MacOS9.2.2. At startup the screen will stay black. The computer goes
through a fairly normal startup as far as I can tell (the lights on the
digi interfaces stop blinking and go to their correct setting as they
should do after a minute or so) but I can't do anything because the
screen is black (22 cinema display). After restarting once usually the
screen comes alive but all the maps, the trash and the controlstrip
have changed location. They seem to think that the screen is much
smaller and group themselves in the topleft quarter of the screen.

Any ideas what might be causing this and how I can solve it?

Thanks beforehand.

Cheers, Bob.

Not sure what the specific cause of your problem is -- might be
anything from a simple corrupted preferences file to a serious
hardware failure. However, I would start with the 'usual'
troubleshoot-stuff for OS9. That is: rebuild the desktop (restart,
and press Command-Option just before the Finder appears), zap PRAM
(hold Command-Option-P-R while booting the Mac). If that doesn't
work, trash the Finder preferences, trash the Monitors preferences.
However, the fact that the screen stays black even during startup
suggest some sort of hardware problem. Bad cable, bad video card?

Thanks Jan. I already did what you suggested at some time and in some
order. The second time booting also usually solves the problem, but it
keeps coming back regularly, so I'm beginning to think a hardware
problem, as you suggested, might be beginning to rear its ugly head.

Hi Bob,

Along with a potential hardware problem,
You may also have a corrupted 9.22 system.
You might want to try reinstalling OS 9.22 from
your software restore disk. Good luck.

if you've got dual boot w/both os's on the same disk (partitions don't fix)
then osx will, WILL write a huge swap file overwriting your os9 stuff if you
start running low on gigs free on the drive. The only solution long term is
to have the dual boot on totally seperate drives. If you can salvage your
stuff cool, i used techtool pro to do but that only worked for so long, hear
disk warrior is better, don't know for sure, do know it neither will fix
this long term if you're dual boot on one drive. In any case apple no longer
tests for os9 at least not in a dual boot on the same drive config and there
aren't really any clear warnings (there might be but i didn't see them) lost
data on boot and external firewires as a result.

hope this helps,
glenn

Thanks Kevin,

If I have to I guess I'll have to, but I would like to postpone that as
long as possible. I never managed to get OS9 installed on this machine
myself and had my dealer do it for me. Actually I didn't even get an
OS9 restore disk with this machine when I bought it. It just came
installed with OSX. I'd hate to have to take it back to my dealer with
authorizations on the disk.

Cheers, Bob.

Re: [L-OT] MacOS9.2.2 startup problem

2004-11-04 by Bob Lowen

Thanks Glenn,

I don't have a dual boot. It is supposed to be just MacOS9.2.2 and
that, apart from some lost OSX files, is all I can see on it as far as
system goes. Actually I didn't install it myself, I asked my dealer to
install it that way because I couldn't manage getting a clean OS9
installation on this machine (the last one to have the ability to have
just OS9 on it but it came with only OSX installed). I never touched
those OSX files and left well alone since I never had any problems with
them.

Re the above problem. I believe to have found what caused it. I have 4
external firewire drives. All LaCie, with two of an older type (which
easily got corrupted by the way) and which you have to switch on
manually (the newer ones switch on and off together with the mac). I
used to switch the older drives on before the computer. That seems to
have been the problem. Now I switch them on after the computer has gone
through the complete startup. I have not had anymore problems for 10
days. I guess (and hope) that was it.

Cheers, Bob
