I believe to have found what caused it. I have 4 external firewire drives. All LaCie, with two of an older type (which easily got corrupted by the way) and which you have to switch on manually (the newer ones switch on and off together with the mac). I used to switch the older drives on before the computer. That seems to have been the problem. Now I switch them on after the computer has gone through the complete startup.
