This same issue may cause some leakage to get back into the mics, that is, you may get a big enough gap due to a lose fit. The advantage is that you don't need to send too high of a signal into them and that'll avoid a high level leakage. Lastly, some singers prefer to have one ear on the monitor and one off so that they can hear themselves.
