Not me. I like to pencil drum parts. Most of the time I will start with either the kick sequence or the hi-hat sequence. The hi-hat part is easy to make variations to once you know what you want. In most case I'll randomize the quantization within 10 to 15%. And then after that do accents, by maxing on the beat I'd like the hi-hat to be loud. With the kick it mostly the 1 and the 3 of a 4/4 bar that are loud. This depends on if I'm doing some drum n bass stuff or not. Rock stuff is mostly in this 1-and-3 fashion. What is also cool is the following: once you have a 2 bar or 4 bar sequence for the hi-hat, try moving the notes just a couple of ticks using the Event float. Another radical technique is to try swapping one bar of notes with the another bar, like fe. the 1st bar with the 2nd in a 2 bar sequence. Some of these techniques I've learnt by watching what drum n bass artists do with their drum parts. I've got a Yamaha Cs1x synth and there were quite a lot of midi/syx files floating on the net for this synth. I just downloaded a couple of them, to see how people write those ripping drum rolls and got more ideas by listening to these XG compatible files. Some cool stuff that can be done with XG modules, btw. Put a wah-wah fx on a drum part, and you've got instant Bootsy Collins. As for other synth parts, I find myself pencilling more and more. Unless there's a groove going on in a song I'm working on, most parts get pencilled in. And if I try to play something, I'll end up adjusting some of the velocity afterwards. Hoping to keep this thread alive, :-), Yoonchi.
