If your going for organic natural true real life sound probably latest and greatest is best but for 80's pop, industrial and alternative style music. The old and cheap Ensoniq's are the best in my opinion.

I guess there are no simple answers. My son plays in a band and will mainly be using the keyboard during rehearsals in a rehearsal room and I'm sure he doesn't want to bring his computer to that place everytime so a soft solution probably won't cut it. I have a Roland RD600 which he would love to use but that's placed in my studio and resale on them is quite high so we're really after something similar but cheaper. 76-88 decent weighted keys, a fair selection of sounds....all in all what Ensoniq has to offer but I have to check the local service before I go in.
BTW I know the Alesis QS series quite well but they are rarely for sale but I guess they could be a good bet as well.
