  My question regarding this is why use the ALT outs? Aren't the ALT outs
post e.q. strip on the channel? I was under the impression that if you like
to record dry then it's better to use the inserts on the back of the mixer
as they are post pre-amp, pre e.q. on the channel strip. That way the signal
you record is no e.q., just the mic pre. That's how the diagram is in the
Mackie manual. Plus what about recording multiple instruments? Like drums.
On my Mackie I only have ALT 3-4, so tracking multiple mics is not an option
with that set up.
  I'm just curious as to what the advantage is of this set-up. If I'm
missing something I would like to know about it!! Thanks!!     --Roger

I guess you could do both. The advantage of the ALTs is you can bus anything in to the MOTU, midi or audio. But I think the direct ins would be 
better if you were recording multiple tracks of live audio. I forget if all the tracks have inserts on the Mackie, but the Motu has enough ins to do 
both. To be honest, when I had a Mackie , it was going into a stereo AMIII card so it made more sense to use the ALT bus, with the MOTU you have 
alot more options. Dave Lewis
