Hello David!! This is funny because I was just about to post the same
question. I'm totally upgrading my p.c. and I'm also going by the RME
reference p.c.
One of the things I found out from the place that is going to order and
install all of the components is that there is a model above the ASUS CSUL2.
It's called the Black Pearl I believe. The only difference is that there is
no video integrated into the board. As you already have a video card (so do
I) you're probably better off without the video onboard. I was told this is
better because there's less of a chance there would be a conflict. There's
only like a $20 difference between the two. Very little if it means more
stability.
I'm sure you've read this here on the list (I know I have), but I'll
mention it anyway. Aparently the Pentium 4 is bad. Even the computer shop I
deal with warned me against it. I'm going with the Pentium 3 Coppermine
1gig.
I'm also putting in a IBM Deskstar 60GXP drive and 512mb of PC133 ram.
I'll be running that with an RME Multiface on Windows 98se or Windows ME
(Haven't decided yet).
I don't know if any of this will be helpful to you. Good Luck!!

Yes, I did want the cusl2 mobo with no onboard audio or video. I
didn't know that's what it was called.

$20 more or less?

Well, I did notice a spectacular performance on the DNS performance
table, for only 2 Asus P4T models included, and they didn't leave
their e-mail addresses, so that I could check in with them. After
looking at the cost of them, included the ram, I didn't think it was
worth it, plus if you're saying they might cause some problems, that
just make me feel better that I'm not considering them.

I'm going with the Pentium 3

I couldn't find that name anywhere on the Asus site yet, do you have a
link? I was looking at the cusl2 815E Solano2 mobo. Is that the same
thing?

I notice some mobo's at this site with 266mhz fsb, does that take
special ram? Would that be of any interest for Logic use or not?

Also what about any dual proccessor systems? Is Logic gonna support
dual proccessor in the next year, and what good would dual proccessor
be? Audio instruments on one and audio tracks on another? Surely not
midi on one and all audio on another, what a waste..

Yes.

If it is an AMD Mobo then it takes DDR Ram of it is a P4 Mobo then it takes
RAMBus.

Hi,

The version of the Asus CUSL2 mobo without audio & video is called
CUSL2-C and actually costs less than the CUSL2 everywhere I've looked.
The Black Pearl is a "Special Edition" CUSL2-C that has a black finish
and some kind of special security feature. It costs more than the
CUSL2-C but less than the CUSL2.

I have a CUSL2 with a PIII 800eb in my Logic system and it works great.
The CUSL2 and CUSL2-c are known for their stability, and as others will
tell you, the P4 should not be trusted quite yet. I just bought a PIII
1000eb which I will swap with the 800 - and put the 800 in my non-music
computer. On the PC side, I don't think you can do too much better than
a CUSL2-C with a PIII 1000eb, considering price, STABILITY, and
reliability. As a sidenote, I also use a Matrox G400, and it works very
well. I haven't gotten the dual-head to work within Logic, though - but
I haven't looked into it much, either. Too busy.

Unfortunately I don't have a link. I'm buying my parts from a computer
store near me. When I talked to him getting prices on everything, he told me
that it was called the Black Pearl. Maybe that's just a nick name or
something. From the way he told me, I figured it was in the name. I'm
looking for it. Hopefully I can find it and send the link. If not, I'll have
to call the guy on Monday/Tuesday to find out. I did see something on one of
the sites listed as CUSL2-C http://www.asuscom.de/de/produkte/index.html
  It's in German though.
The one without onboard video is $20 more. (From what I was told)

Thanks Jason!! That clears things up!! Do you think it's better to steer
away from that "security" feature? Is it the kind of thing that can possibly
interfere with audio recording?

I found it at www.pricewatch.com. That's the name. I'm now trying to
decide on the ram. I know it should be PC133, but what about
"Registered ECC" , and "ECC". Or don't mess with the "ECC"?

What does the "eb" mean on the proccessor, if I just order the PIII
1ghz, do I need to designate the "eb" version?

thanks so much,

I don't really know anything about the security feature, but I doubt it
would have any benefit for using Logic...

Re: [L-OT] LAWP:Age Old Mobo search

There are 2 versions of the PIII 1ghz - "e" and "eb". The "e" version
has a 100mhz bus speed and is for Slot 1 motherboards. The "eb" has a
133mhz bus speed and is for Socket 370 boards, like the CUSL2-C.

By the way, David - did you have to do anything special to get the 2
monitors working within Logic. I can get 2 monitors going in plain old
Windows, but when I open Logic, just one...

Thanks

Hi Jason,

Do you mean the other display goes black? Or Logic's Windows aren't
stretching over there? You have to make the main window "sizable", not
full screened", and then just stretch it over there. After it's over
there, you can "full screen" it again. OR you can use floating windows
over there.

If your 2nd display goes dead, only when you'r using Logic, I
wouldn't have any idea what's up with that.

david

RE: [L-OT] LAWP:Age Old Mobo search

2001-08-05 by Jonathan Gourd

You need to make Windows use the virtual screen mode. You designate both
screens as having the exact same screen settings. In the video driver you
should (not all provide this function) be able to set the displays so that
the two act as one large screen. For instance my Matrox G400 is set up so
that 2 1280 x 1024 screens act as a single 2560 x 1024 display. You then
maximize Logic so that it covers both screens and voila, you can move any
child window to either display.

If you must run each display as an independent display, you can hold control
while opening a window in Logic and it becomes a "float" window. These, you
should be able to place these anywhere on either screen regardless of the
Logic "Main MDI" (Multiple Document Interface) screen.
>

Re: [L-OT] LAWP:Age Old Mobo search

2001-08-05 by J. Ruck

I have to run each monitor independently because one is 19" & one is 15"
- and I don't want to keep the 19" at 800x600. So I'll try the floating
thing you guys are talking about. I can't remember if I tried that
before giving up.

Thanks

Video Capture

2001-08-05 by LogicBaby

Does any one know any Analog video to Firewire converter box??

RE: [L-OT] Video Capture

2001-08-05 by Jonathan Gourd

Yup I sure do.

The best way is with a Digital-8 camcorder with analog pass-through. I have
a Sony that is not only a decent, inexpensive camcorder, but it will
digitize any 8 mm tape you put in it as well as any analog signals you feed
into its inputs.

You hook it to the Firmwire card and voila! instant, DV compression.

Why not quote in sequence??????????????? Grrr. It's so easy.

I don't know what the price of a digital 8 camera is these days but
Sony also makes an analog to firewire convertor box that only sells
for about $200 US. It is called the DVMC-DA1. Catchy name huh?
Anyway it does what you want.

That unit has been discontinued. They are getting hard to find. I did not do
an exhaustive search, but the best price I found for the new one is $359.

I bought the DVMC-DA2, the successor of *DA1, about a year ago.
MSRP in Japan was 35,000 yen (about USD 280).
I don't know whether it's on the market now, though...
