Audio Round-Table Tonight! [and re: last week's summary]
2001-08-22 by David Eager
Hi Friends!
It's Wednesday again, and tonight's topic is:
'Slicing and Dicing' (Gensu knives on audio)
Hope to see you there :)
Dave Eager [oink]
btw, if anyone has anything they would like to see raised as a formal
topic in coming weeks, please email me at oink@....
btw, I missed posting a summary of last week's forum as we didn't have
enough users who had experience in working to QuickTime turn up. But
I'll just post a snippet here:
I'd like to run the movie topic again , at a time when we can get a few
experienced users to attend.
> oink says, "ok joe, the topic is using QuickTime movies in logic and over rocketnetwork, if that interests you ?"
> janpulsford says, "r we talking about QT tonight?"
> oink says, "yeh, QT in Logic"
> oink says, "and in rocket sessions"
> joemagic1 says, "case in point , I used logic & quicktime to create a flash site for my wife, you can use it as a reference tonite if U wish"
> joemagic1 says, "www.H2Oliquidweb.com"
> oink says, "actually, I discovered last week you can import a swf into logic"
> oink says, "without converting to a QT movie"
> janpulsford says, "oh great"
> janpulsford says, "i din't know that"
> janpulsford says, "i tried sending QT over rocket once but the smpte time was incorrect"
> oink says, "jan, was it between 2 macs ?"
> janpulsford says, "yes"
> oink says, "was the movie a big one ? "
> janpulsford says, "no"
> janpulsford says, "it was done as a test"
> oink says, "I have a suspicion that quicktime's ability to drop frames when the processor load is too great may have contributed to that"
> janpulsford says, "yes i noticed converting a QT into flash as an animated gif loses quite a few frames"
> daze joined the Session.
> oink says, "I think the best way to assure that QT isn't gonna drop frames is to convert the movie to a smaller screen size"
> joemagic1 says, "ok I added the music to the site by using logic & quicktime"
> oink says, "ok I'm gonna try grabbing a swf and posting"
> oink says, "oh its all full-page stuff"
> oink says, "good use of flash though :)"
> joemagic1 says, "shes pretty good at it"
> oink says, "she is"
> oink says, "Joe, how did you go syncing with swf ? I always have trouble with that"
> oink says, "seems like hit-and miss when I try it"
> joemagic1 says, "actually i had her convert to quicktime"
> joemagic1 says, "then I wrote the music to it"
> joemagic1 says, "cuts it up into frames"
> oink says, "ah cut up the audio into frames"
> oink says, "Brett; can i ask you . how does QT handle larger movies with logic ?"
> skwawksoun says, "well why do you want to see on sess?"
> oink says, "does it drop frames when the cpu is being overloaded, thus causing sync problems ?"
> oink says, "OK I'm just posting a swf to this session"
> janpulsford says, "really good tip about swf and logic"
> janpulsford says, "i've just been trying it . .cool!!!"
> oink says, "and the swf is clickable etc in logic"
> oink says, "thats cool too"
> skwawksoun says, "what speed processor and ram and all are you going to need to noty have drop outs"
> oink says, "it dpends on the size of the movie"
> oink says, "you can always convert the movie to a smaller screen size, but for full-frame-rate playback, i think about 300mhz is the entry point on a G3, and i guess 500 mhz on a pentium"
> oink says, "ok, sorry, I got screen freeze there"
> skwawksoun says, "i'm lost here mate ican surely see the point but as far as the synching goes i wouldn't know
> skwawksoun says, "you'd need 2 monitors as well really wouldn't you"
> oink says, "2 monitors is fairly essential"
> oink says, "cause a movie takes valuable real-estate from the logic window"
> skwawksoun says, "so it all starts adding for one puter"
> oink says, "unless you are running a 21" monitor"
> skwawksoun says, "even then switching sets would be a royal pain"
> oink says, "I agrre sync would be easier on one monitor"
> oink says, "ah, actually only QT5 supports .swf files as far as I'm aware"
> skwawksoun says, "i just dont like to push resources to the max for stable reasons"
> oink says, "absolutely"
> skwawksoun says, "so if i did that movie bus. i'd rather clock the 2 puters "
> oink says, "thats a good idea"
> oink says, "ok, anyone have anything to say about sync ? and movie size ?"
> oink says, "this looks like a lead-balloon topic right now :("
