The Logic Off Topic list

Can anybody tell me why Macs periodically seem to freeze up for about 
15-30 seconds.  The phenomenon I am referring is the one where 
everything on the screen but the cursor freezes but if you type text 
or commands or click on things when the computer unfreezes the 
results of all the commands or typing that you have done suddenly 
happen all at once.  If I am working in logic the music will go on 
playing in the background during the freeze.  It happens on almost 
every Mac I have ever used.
