Apology / Media Manipulation

Apology / Media Manipulation

2001-10-14 by GAmoore@aol.com

I remember that case also. I don't know the merits of the two sides.
Evidently the author was not a crackpot but actually an academician with some
credibility.

I lesson I took away from that sad episode is that what happened in the Nazi
Death camps is to not to be questioned. Its something you just don't talk
about. However, I do know that many others besides Jews were killed -
homosexuals, gypsies, political prisoners, etc. I have no doubt that it was a
terrible tragedy for the Jewish community of Europe. This is also borne out
by the large number of movies and staggering number of books and research
about this subject (Shindler's list etc.).

However, it is easy to imagine that the Jews were the only to suffer and die.
Actually the Russians lost about 20M, the Chinese about 10-15M, and Japan
about 4M. So there was plenty of suffering going around. However, there very
little written and no movies about the Chinese holocaust. So the media shapes
our opinion.

That is why Americans don't give a shit about Palestinians and Arabs - the
only place they see them is in "Navy Seals" or "Delta Force" movies made in
Israel featuring Arab bad guys. They don't see the reality of life and death.
This is the message the Prince was trying to get across, which was
misunderstood. Frankly, I think Guiliani reacted too swiftly and I think it
was not within his authority to make that decision. He should have asked the
federal government, state department, or the victims of the families who
would have recieved the $10M.

Do you see the common thread in both cases? People are so convinced they know
the truth that they react with anger and hostility to protect their world
vision - nevermind the facts. Gilliani just can not accept the fact that we
have a problem in the Arab lands that lead to this disaster - rightly or
wrongly.

I don't think this is true.

Image problems abound.

Associating the Palestinian cause with the Sept 11 attack is the last
thing the Palestinians need and the last thing the Prince should have
been doing. That's why I don't particularly see anything wrong with
Gulliani refusing the money.

Last night I was watching pictures of 2 towns in Afghanistan bombed wrongly
by the American plains, it was mostly injured women and children, the men
where out fighting and the pictures where so moving, babies injured and
crying in what is supposed to be a hospital..... This was all on Al-jazeera
TV, while BBC and CNN had 2 programs talking about the Al-jazeera being
"provocative", even Larry King had a "talk" with an al-jazeera
representative live, The American government has instructed all the media
NOT to publish any of those pictures, all what was said that a Bomb
weighting one Ton missed its target, along with the common pentagon
briefing....Amazing, what happened to freedom of speech?

Not yet completely dead.

There were 3, maybe 4, other similar reports like this printed in the
British Press yesterday, but for some reason the sites for the two
newspapers that ran them are down right now. Don't know why ... but I
honestly don't think it's part of any conspiracy!!

>>Amazing, what happened to freedom of speech?

Its been mentioned on CNN and MSNBC yesterday and today.

The problem I am worrying about is Pakistan. It could turn into a civil war,
with a taliban like government taking over. They are the only moslem country
to have nuclear weapons. These bombing mistake incidents, while terrible,
could be used to inflame these masses of brainwashed fundamentalists. One of
the MSNBC journalists in Pak, Ashley Banfield, said people threw rocks at
her, but they noticed some of those chanting "Jihad" were children who
giggled when they said it.

Well, as you can see the government's instructions are being ignored, so in
this case the freedom seems to be preserved - for now.

During WWII we had much tighter restrictions on what could be told about on
radio. Interestingly DC Comics was going to publish a comic book that
alluded to an atomic sort of weapon and the government banned it when they
learned of it.

Hunter S. Thompson wrote a pretty good article about this at
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/thompson/010918.html . Whether you read it or
not, I like the old Churchill quote, "The first casualty of War is always
Truth." and moreover "In wartime, the Truth is so precious that it should
always be surrounded by a bodyguard of Lies."
