MP3.com et al

MP3.com et al

2001-11-05 by Zeek Duff

I just discovered one of my tunes, "Lambada" hit the top 100 Latin Jazz
songs played on MP3.com on Oct 21st, coming in at #83. I'm not
bragging, just surprised. I've noted a few friends who have had things
in that area and Ted Vieira has had several in the top ten of the same
category for some time. Congrats, TED!

The thing that's bugging me is that since media giant conglomerate
Vivendi Universal bought MP3.com, the pay-for-play has dwindled to
nonsense. Now, an artist gets nothing if they don't pay the $30/month
"Premium Artist Services" charge, and even some of the more successful
artists now aren't making enough to even pay that fee, due to changes in
the rate of pay.

I wonder, has anyone heard of any NEW web sites that are like the OLD
MP3.com??? I saw something in a guitar or pro audio forum some months
ago about that, and can't recall which one it was and didn't have
anything to hang anywhere at the time, anyway... I think Vivendi is
trying to kill off MP3.com, and since the "founders" won't be affected,
I'd not only like to see that effort succeed, but moved to where Vivendi
does NOT benefit and musical artists DO.

Curiously,

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the "Universe," a part
limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and
feelings, as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical
delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for
us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few
persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison
by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Albert Einstein of all

One I've heard people mention fairly favourably is:
http://www.ampcast.com
Can't speak from personal experience, though.

Bit late for your probably ... but you might also want to check out the
following for views on mp3.com and their licensing arrangements before
submitting anything further to them:

Thanks to ALL who responded, and it looks like the unclear winner is
www.ampcast.com for being "most like" the "old mp3.com" in artist
support. We'll see, I still have more recording work to do before I
move things over, but it WILL get done. :)

Thanks again, and best of luck to all of us!
