Upgrade (sorry) q for emagic on LAWG4 to LAWP5

Upgrade (sorry) q for emagic on LAWG4 to LAWP5

2002-02-18 by monsdrum

Hi there

I feel a bit sorry to bring on the subject of upgrading, since many
of the times this has happened before, it has ended in quite
longwinded threads with a considerable amount of abuse involved; this
is just a simple question and I would really just like a simple
answer (preferably from one of the emagic guys). After that, I'll
leave the subject again.

I finally ordered my upgrade, wanting to go from LAWG4 to LAWP5. I
had by a few emails from my local distributor (Roland Scandinavia,
distributing emagic in Denmark) understood that I would have to first
upgrade LAWG4 to LAWP4, then LAWP4 to LAWP5. However, the dealer
called Roland while I waited, and heard that an upgrade that goes
directly from gold4 to platinum5 will be available within the next
months. If that's true, it would certainly be nice, probably save me
some money. Can anyone confirm that this product will be released?

He also said, that while the LAWP4 -> LAWP5 should land in Denmark
this friday, the LAWG4 -> LAWP5 wont be available for at least
another month. Having learned from the users here, that the upgrade
is actually nothing but a fresh CD installer for LAWP5, I don't
understand why the gold4 -> platinum5 is so much different from the
platinum4 -> platinum5, that I couldn't just get one of these CDs
landing this friday? I mean, since they don't actually relate to the
software previously installed, the CD should be the same, shouldn't
it? Or am I missing some point here? The dealer I spoke to was
equally baffled - we both agreed that it didn't make much sense
saying "we sell this product available from this friday, and then we
sell another product which is exactly the same, only it wont be
available for another month".

Any comments and/or explanations??

regards

monsdrum

This is what they told me. LAWG4 -> LAWP5 will be available in about
3 months.

Joeri suggested that I pointed my question directly at emagic, since
apparently none of the emagic guys subscribe to the list. Here is the
reply that I got:

Hello,

Logic Plantinum 5 does not only come with a new CD; it includes a new
USB
dongel as well.
The dongle is -from the technical point of view -different for
upgrades
and updates and: The box itself includes different content (in the
upgrade
box, there´s a complete new manual and, and and).

This is a bit weird imo. I too ordered the Gold to Platinum, 4 to 5
upgrade, and my dealer's guess was that it should arrive in a few
weeks (not months). The manual story doesn't seem to hold much water
either, since, as far as I know, the Gold and Platinum manuals are
the same. Or at least: in the Gold manual e.g. all plug-ins are
treated, but it's mentioned which of them are platinum only. Ditto
for TDM hardware support and other platinum-only features.

As for the dongle: since we're talking about a completely new
install, how can there be a technical difference between the update &
upgrade dongles?

So personally I guess I would be just as happy with the Platinum
updater, as I can't see how it's supposed to differ from the
Gold-Platinum upgrade.

Maybe I'm overlooking something obvious though...

cheers,
HJ

It's nice to see that someone other than me have the same difficulty
understanding this. I would like to remind you repliers what Joeri
told me, that none of the emagic guys actually read this list, so we
wont be getting any "inside" answers out of these posts. I will
hereby ask you to send a mail to emagic themselves about this, either
to Michael or Markus privately, or, if you think they are being
burdened enough already with this (I do), then to info@....
Hopefully we can provoke emagic to comment officially on this, or at
least give an explanation that makes sense.

regards

Oh well... I don't mind that much, personally, if it takes a bit
longer before v5 arrives. I probably won't have much time to do
anything sensible (musically :) in the upcoming months anyway, so
it's not that much of an issue to me. And since it seems that the
demo-period for plugins starts as soon as you install the software
(bummer, btw), I'd rather have the software at a time that I _do_
have time to play around with it...
I'll just give it another few weeks at least, before contacting my
dealer or emagic themselves. In the meantime, if anyone finds out
anything, then of course it would be nice if (s)he kept the list
updated. After all, it's not very useful if multiple users bombard
info@emagic with the exact same question.

cheers,
HJ
