I have 3 headphones:
* AKG K240
* Sennheiser HD25
* Sony MDR 7509

The AKG sucks. I don't like its sound at all (but then, I don't like Genelec monitors either :-).

The Sennheiser is the first one I bought and I didn't listen before buying it. Biiig mistake: these are DJ headphones! Too many bass frequencies and you definitely can't use them as a reference. For DJ's however, it's great: It's LOUD (really!) and they shield you from outside noise. However, the "caps" (is that the right word?) are small so after some hours, your ears hurt.

The Sony: my best headphones without any doubt. The 7509 has a very balanced sound and can be used as a reference. Feels great, sounds great and is best built of the three (although the "fold" mechanism (you can fold them up) doesn't work anymore on mine). I love them!

Cheers,
Joeri

If they suck why are they so popular...?

Because you can't use most Sennheiser for mixing because even the worst
amateur track will sound like silk in those cans.

They have recently ripped of the circumaural approach of the AKG's so they
might be better now for pro use, but be careful which model you choose.
Most of them are for "hifi" use... and are not good fpr producing balanced
mixes...

Glad someone mentions Beyerdynamic :-). I have a DT770 and love it
too. Quite comfortable for a pair of closed cans. Love the sound
too, fortunately :-).
