88 weighted tangents

88 weighted tangents

2002-06-30 by mikaeladle

Hello!

I´m looking for a keyboard, any type...with 88 weighted
tangents/keys for use as master keyboard in Logic. Any
recommendations?

regards

Hello Mikael,

I been using the Fatar SL-880 for a couple of years with LPW from 4.0
thru 5.1.3 and find it excellent for the price (US 600-650). The only
negatives I can think of at the moment is the flakiness of the zone
buttons (sometimes you have to hit it several times to activate it) and
the wallwart PS. Other than that, its great for things like layering,
zones, velocity mapping etc. Also,it has a great touch for use with
GigaStudio 160's gigapiano(dedicated PC),which is what I originally
purchased it for.

This depends on your skills/preferences, so I'm afraid you have to try
*every* model yourself and then decide which one works the best for you.
After 30 years of playing the real piano I had quite a serious dilema when I
was trying to make up my mind, as I'm more used to heavy keyboards, so some
popular weighted keyboards simply didn't work for me. I think you have to
look at Yamaha's P-series (P-80/200) and Roland A90 (not heavy enough for
me, but would be the best choice for sequencing as it has the best MIDI
functionality I've ever worked with). Korg's ProX keys are great, so Triton
ProX would be a nice addition if you need another sound module.

Best,

Andy

Hard to beat the Kawai MP9000 for action -- 88 wooden keys. Like most big
weighted action controllers it weighs a lot -- 80+ lb/40kg or so. Big
Roland 88 key synths are not bad A90 controller not my favorite. There are
lots of reviews of all these in the Keyboard section of Harmony Central.

In the end you need to try the action yourself to see whether you could
live with it.

Murray
