important question to me

important question to me

2002-07-18 by delfinx2000

This its a important question for my business.
Below are my home working tools:
Mackie D8B digital mixing desk, digital outs and ins for computer
comunication.
Mac G4 466 with somes HD (one just for audio purpouses)
Software: Potools LE with digi 001 interface an Pci card.
Logic audio platinum 7.4.3
Plugins : TC Bundle,Waves gold bundle, antares autotune and
mic modeler etc,etc... ( I think the best for the present) Plus the
plugins from the Mackie D8b (revs,delays..)
System monitoring: two Genelec 1030A.
Enviroment Without acoustic treatment.(I will do it soon.)
Here it came my question.
If i make all the recording for my musical produccions in a
professional studio in the town. Can i bring all that tracks to
home and continue mixing them for to obtain a final
professsional work just for to deliver it to the record company?
As many of us I am producer, song writer, musician, etc, and, till
now, i have done all my mixes in comercial studios having at
home a professional stuff that normally we only use it for
monitorization my sound modules.
Its dificult to me to obtain good mixes in comercial studios. There
is a lot of reasons.
The main ,its dificult to me to work with diferent stuff on every big
studios that I use to go because each mixer desk or outboard
gear are diferent from a place to another. And the engineers not
ever are the people who are the best work mate for me.I like the
sound but not the final mix result.Because i did it in a
unconfortable enviroment.
Whe i bought all my gear three years ago,i never thought that the
digital tecnology it could oferr to me the facility of doing good
professional releases at home.Because all the time i was
thinking that i was buying
broadcast or projet focused gear, good for demos and litle works
but not for serious releases.
Till now i have done all the mix work as one more
engineer/producer.But i never thought that my home gear could
obtain
top quality .
May i take this decision without the fear of being wrong or may i
need to buy more class A tuff?(Already i know I must make some
acustic treatment in my working room before, but I am just
talking about all my stuff)
I wish to know if there is any one making final professional
works with a stuff like the mine.
The kind of music that I do its wide (from folk to dance
music,beides Pop)
I need some help of you to take a good decision.
Thanks
Sory for my english Im from Madrid

In my opinion there is just one thing missing. You need some kind of
DSP card like the TC power core or the UA powered plugins card.
Native pluigins are nice but there is simply a huge difference in
quality when you use a DSP card. In my case I use a TDM system for
the DSP to run plugins there are native plugins that I prefer for
certain tasks but for the really critical comps and EQs the
difference in quality of DSP plugins is just too great.

Never.

A common problem... Often, studio-engineers are quite professional in using
their gear, but the social realition between them and the
musicians/composers is sometimes difficult. Nevertheless, they often work
over years to learn how to do dense and musical mixing - no thing done over
night. But if I were you, I would go ahead and learn how to mix!

I would avoid using the Reverb-algorithms of the D8B-plugs as well as any
other native Reverb except maybe Renaissance Reverb from Waves-company. They
sound too cruel... But regarding the other stuff: people mixed hits on much
worse stuff...

I think you're on a good way. Most important for a good sound are the
recordings (at least if it's not all MIDI-stuff). For this you should use
the knowledge, the microphones, the rooms and the fine AD-Converters of a
good studio. At least you should avoid using the mediocre AD/DACs of the
D8B, and with a good microphoning, you won't have to do too much EQing as
well, as the EQs in the D8B aren't very good, too... With a little more
money for some good Reverbs (preferable with digital in/out as ie.
TC-Reverbs) or as posted with a DSP-card, you can approach in mixing,
without fear about bad-sounding gear. Maybe an engineer from Madrid has some
time to show you basics of compressing and eqing, and here you go! Good
luck!!

Ah, Madrid! Had a hellish 14 hours on the Madrid-trainstation in 1999. with
drug-police (and their lucky-at-me-looking dog), and only half an hour
sleep... but its a wonderful city, full of life!

No I am seriously considering getting a DSP card to use on the native
tracks I run alongside the TDM tracks. The problem for me is PCI
slots. With three digidesign cards and a video card for my second
monitor all mine are full. I am thinking about getting a Dual Head
AGP card so I could get rid of the second video card I have in one of
my PCI slots but I am really not to happy about the idea putting any
more money into this computer when I am pretty sure I will be buying
another Mac whenever the new models come out.

I may just bite the bullet and buy one pretty soon anyway.
