IPod / field recordings

IPod / field recordings

2002-08-28 by Jeremy Martin

Heya

I was thinking of getting a mini-disc recorder to do field recordings (of
cool bug/frog/etc sounds) but it occured to me that maybe the new IPod
could record things instead. Can you hook a microphone up to it? If so,
does it just have one of those tiny stereo inputs, or one of the larger
1/4" ones? I've honestly never bought a microphone before in my life
(except for the cheapo one that came bundled with a previous sound card)
-- if the IPod does just have one of the "small" analog inputs would that
result in much sonic loss? I imagine mini-disc players/recorders would
suffer from a similar input-size limitation; would I be better off biting
the bullet and buying a portable DAT recorder?

Cheers
Jeremy

The Creative Nomad will record to wav files, and has a (not great) mic
input, as well as line input. Get the right model
