You have unknowingly outlined the main difference... The open source Linux
community have *ported* _their_ OS to another Hardware architecture.
Notice the porting did not go the other way around.

- Linux already runs on PPC for years. And therefore needs no porting.
- Darwin (also open source) already runs on x86.

So what's the point of this discussion?

Good luck...

If that's all it took - why has this not already been done? Mac OS X has 
been available for over 2 years (including betas). Darwin is already on 
x86 - so what's up with these so called talented hackers, as they 
haven't got OS X happening yet...They are spending most of their time 
petitioning Apple instead, "Please give it to us"...

This is a pointless discussion...
