i tried to download the AutoTune demo and convert it to AU with
FXPansion's utility but it just quietly didnt work. Does anyone know
if this is a demo limitation (security) ? or if i were to buy the
full version would i be able to successfully make an AU out of it?

You know, I tried the same thing... Didn't work for me either. 

I could have sworn that I saw George Leger III use it via this method on his training CD set 
for Logic 6..... 

Why don't you try contacting Antares by e-mail or phone???

Let us know here if you do find out anything, I will do the same.
