I use an Avalon 737sp and totally love it... you can often pick up a 
used model on eBay, or a store demo, for around $1500.

I first worked extensively with them in a studio I used to work in a 
lot. They had a pair of them and they sounded great. Couple years later 
I upgraded my own studio and was happy to buy one. It kept breaking 
down. Seemed to be heat related. After three times I insisted the 
distributor give me a new one. This new one has been rock solid for 18 
months and somehow sounds better as well. Terribly subjective thing to 
say I know, but some other colleagues felt the same also...?

I get the feeling that the sound of valve gear in particular can differ 
significantly from unit to unit. Even brand new off the assembly line.
