NYC Session Work

2005-05-26 by litepipe

Hello Everyone,
I know I'm stepping way into OT territory here but.....I'm moving to NYC in September and I'm looking for session work. I was wondering if anyone can give me tips about where to even start getting connections....What kind of demo do I need?
I'm a multi-instrumentalist. I play guitar, drums and bass on a pro level and I'm an experienced session musician. I'm very creative and easy to work with (I don't have a problem with authority). I can play a very wide variety of music and I have a great understanding of music theory. Did I mention I have no problems playing with a click?
I thought I would try the Logic group since I've been a long time member and it's always been a great resource. Thanks for your time!!

I think it really depends on the style you want to be doing. NYC is not
for everything. If you're into playing Jazz of every shape, color,
taste and style you're in the right place. Also some of the more hip
Latin productions.

However, if you're more at home in the pop world I would think that
Nashville and Los Angeles are more suited to what you would like to do.
On the other hand, New York has a lot of live playing opportunities
(badly paid however!). I have never been to Nashville so I don't know
about the live situation there, but in LA it's not good. Lots of
functions and GB stuff, everything else seems to be really underground.

Anyway, use any personal connection that you can get and go to sessions
and

play
play
play

Be prepared to have standards turned around on you, extended by one bar
every form, harmonic substitutes that every one seems to know but you
(well, guess why...). It's a tough scene. I didn't like this kind of
hazing, but then again, maybe that's how they separate the wheat from
the chaff.

Write a blog on how things are going, I'd be very interested and it's a
great way of creating a buzz around yourself!

Cheers and good luck!

There are a load of music houses in NYC that use session players often.
Put together a CD and drop in on them and try to meet one of the
producers. Hopefully you'll vibe with a few and they'll throw you some
work.

Just a thought, I'm sure you're a monster on all your instruments but
people in commercial music (ads) like to feel like they're using
someone for their specialty. Plus if you say you're great on several
instruments, it may not register the same way being a great guitarist
or whatever would.

The musicians that I see get a load of work are acoustic bass, horn
players and drummers. Jazzy guitarists get called often as well.

Since I'm guessing you're a Logic user you probably write and produce
too.
So you can also try to get work doing demos etc.

When you get to NYC give me a shout and I'll give you a list of music
houses.

David
