No. It might end in a somewhat heated discussion, but I don't consider those to be platform wars. > There is only one company to blame for Logic dropping support of VST, > and that > company is Steinberg; ready why in the Logic documentation. Sorry,. but that's nonsense. I am blaming Emapple for dropping VST support just as much. My old projects won't load properly anymore. My presets won't load anymore. I'd have to wade through endless troubles to make my songs load properly in any 6.x and 7.x version of Logic. And all that while keeping in mind that VST support would be possible easily. Apart from that, the AU format hasn't shown its potential yet at all. There's close to no AU-only plugins released. And those you can find hardly prove the (possible) superiority of the format. Most developers actually DO like the AU format, they may also like it more than VST, but in the end they'll have to make things compatible to both formats anyways, so a "new" format doesn't help them at all. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything to say against the AU format, but it simply came too late. Developers are somewhat forced to develop for VST as well, and I'd take any bet that you won't find any of the big guns developing AU-only plugins any day soon. VST is a de facto standard, regardless whether you like that fact or not - it's some sort of common denominator. Even Urs Heckmann, one of the most vital AU supporting developers is now releasing everything in VST format as well. Even for Windows. Oh, just been reading your statement again: Do you mean that Steinberg is responsible for Logic to drop VST support due to bad documentation of the format? This might be true - but it's only true to a certain extent. There's almost countless other hosts supporting VST very well. In fact, some of them (such as EnergyXT) are even supporting VST a lot better than Cubase itself, adding full MIDI learn capabilities of each and every parameter and such. Energy XT is even adding all that to Logic. > Maybe it would help if you told it to the people in Cupertino. Shouting > at a > usergroup, no matter how loud, won't help. Not sure whether I agree. It's popular user groups that may in the end be heard. I'm sure that anything I could send to Apple would hardly be heard at all. > It's just simply not that obvious whether they are really flaws or just > design > choices with advantages and disadvantages, and neither is it that > obvious > that Emagic/Apple is to blame for all of them. And stating these > opinions as > obvious facts is how wars are started. In many aspects it's obvious. For instance, VST support would be possible. Backwards compatibility would be possible too. It has all been there previously, but it has been abandonded to follow some new paradigm. IMO for the worse. Regards, Sascha
