QT streaming?

QT streaming?

2006-12-18 by Trevor Gilchrist

Does anyone know where I might go to learn the best way to stream
video content and audio from my web page? I've been building
self-promo pages for a while, but can't find info on how do do
this in the most efficient way. Right now, I just post a QT video
and everyone has to sit and wait for it to load before it plays —
and it's never very top quality.

When I visit Apple's QT site, I can click on an HD movie trailer
and it's playing at 'full'-res within seconds. Probably H.264 etc.
and I have all the compression tools, but I need to know about
streaming servers and hosts and all that nonsense.

If anyone has any ideas or links or forums, I'd be very grateful.

Many thanks.

Dunno 'bout video, but I know how streaming audio files are done, so
maybe video's done the same way...?

Instead of a link directly to an mp3 file you link to a .m3u file, which
is simply a text file with the complete link to the actual mp3 file. You
can even have links to several mp3 files, each on a separate line.
Realaudio works the same way, except with different file extensions.

The streaming mp3's at http://www.cdbaby.com/ are done this way.

HTH, Bill

That's very interesting Bill, thank you. And I get to learn about
CDBaby.com, which had passed me by...

Gotta love it :-)

Many thanks,

No worries, Trevor. :-)

Hey, could you let us know what the answer is when you figure out how to
stream video? It might come in handy for some of us one day...

Cheers, Bill

Will do. Seems it's all about the hosting company/package you choose at the outset — they
have to be running Mac-based Darwin Quicktime Streaming Server for 'genuine' streaming to
be possible....

Thanks Trevor. Pity it's not better news though. Have you found out
whether it's possible to do non-genuine streaming with the stub file
method that I mentioned?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
