Using the Audigy soundcards with logic

| Record | Section | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
Is Audigy compatible with logic? | Yes and no --- the card is, but some of the supplied "Audigy1" software isn't. The versions of "PlayCentre" and "Sound Recorder" on the Audigy1 CDRom both seem to screw up a logic installation, perhaps because of their MP3 features. |
What about the rest of the software? | WaveStudio (not installed by default) is a useful stereo recorder/editor. Most people hate the "Creative Taskbar" thing. If in doubt, don't install anything you don't need. |
driver | I can't get my Audigy to work as an audio interface under logic. Every time I hit play, the thing stalls. Why? | The ASIO drivers supplied on the original Audigy1 CD are really bad. Install them, but then visit the Creative website and download the driver update pack. Then things should work.
Is the FireWire interface any good? | The onboard port(s) seem to be fine for connecting peripherals (hard drives, CD writers, etc. etc.). But if you want to use it to connect different computers together as a network, you may have problems, because there's no single standard for the protocol to be used for cross-computer networking over FireWire, so you may have problems ifyou mix and match different OSes or OS versions. The supplied FireWire networking program may not want to talk to other FireWire computer network programs. A spare FireWire port for peripherals is always handy. |
Can I run more than one Audigy on one machine? | YES! the (internal) audigy drivers are multi-card, so if your PC has enough spare slots and resources (IRQ's etc), you can have two (or more?) Audigies plugged in, and all the additional inputs and outputs shopuld be available under a single driver. Running all those extra audio ports may place extra demands on your system, though. |
Can I mix and match different sorts of Audigy card? | Difficult. the EX and Platinum models are probably architecturally different, and seem to need different drivers (answer=no?). The "Player" and "Platinum" cards in a series do seem to be identical and interchangeable. I don't yet know if you can mix Audigy1 and Audigy2's . |
Why can't I access the individual outs individually? | Audigy1 initially defaults to "two speaker mode" (at least, mine did). This means that signals sent to any of the stereo outs are mixed intertrnally, and the same mix signal is then sent to all the outputs. Its a convenient way of being able to plug into the front or back of your PC to get at the same audio mix. If you want to make the outputs truly separate, the supplied conmtrol panel app letsyou switch the card into four (or more) speaker mode. |
What's the latency? Do individual outputs screw up latency figures? | I found that after a minimal install with no Audigy control panel software, and the driver update pack, using two speaker mode, my Audigy 1 was happily running under logic with latency set to 7ms. When I installed the control panel and mixer utilities, and switched to four speaker mode, that got screwed up and the latency wouldn't go below 50ms (ugh!). Right now, I don't know whether Creative's 4-speaker mode was the culprit, or whether it was the control panel software ... at that point I got the third-party drivers instead, and used those to route everything. |
Are the effects any good? | Actually, they are ... but the control software isn't really designed for musical applications. I think the reverbs are excellent (clear, transparent, detailed, thirty different edit parameters!), but you can't save and recall those settings as part of a logic song, because there's no VST-type controller panel. The quality is excellent, but the "connectivity" isn't, there's no obvious way to put Audigy reverb onto a logic effects send. Of course, you could always try using a second Audigy card as a dedicated hardware DSP reverb card, and hook it up by its jack sockets ... |
How about the SoundFont facilities? | Audigy gives you two separate 16-MIDI-channel hardware SoundFont players, and the control panel software lets you set banks and banks of soundfonts to load into PC memory at startup. The two soundfont instruments are accessable from logic's arrange page, which lets you browse through the bank and patchnames to find the sound you want. If only logic's own instruments let you do this! The two instruments are "loaded" separately, so one might contain sets of GM patches, and the other might be non-GM patch sets. The weak point is when it comes to routing and processing, if you want to play your soundfont patch through a logic effect, you are suddenly a bit stuck. Once you get used to logic effects o other instruments, its a real pain not being able to do the same with soundfont instruments (yes, you CAN import soundfonts into EXS24, but the converted EXS versions usually don't play as well as the originals). |
What operating systems are supported? | Creative only support the PC, if you look aroud you /might/ be able to find indepedent Linux or UNIX drivers somewhere ... But I've not heard of anyone producing a mac driver. |
driver | Where do I get the new Creative Audigy drivers? | Creative's site is at http://www.soundblaster.com/
driver | Where do I find alternative drivers? | "The kX Project" write and maintain their own "alternative" windows drivers for soundcards based on the chip range used by Audigy. Their drivers don't support all the card features, but are written primarily with musicians in mind. Their screenshot page is at http://kxproject.spb.ru/shots.php?language=en , navigate from there to get to the "FAQ", "Known Issues" and "Download" pages
