RE: [lpc2000] Looking to buy compiler

2005-11-06 by Dan Beadle

My last shot...

GNU is free. But the learning curve to use it is higher than IAR or
Keil. (They pretty much work in the first hour out of the box)

I bought a $1000 pre-configured GNU a couple years a go. It still
didn't solve the learning curve.

I like and use the IDEs. I often use an external editor, but making
quick change in the IDE is nice. I work on projects with 50+ source
files. The IDE manages builds well.

Finally, most all of the benchmarks show that the professional compilers
generate better code: smaller and faster. Smaller is not that useful,
but faster always is a priority.

GNU is valuable once you climb the learning curve, but the $2500 or so
to buy commercial tools is cheap compared to the value of my time in
lashing together a system. If you have climbed the learning curve,
great.

Dan

Hi,

Mr. Dan and Mr. Greg said some thing which I simply must comment. Sorry.

While I agree that if you are a HW engineer and you have just to toggle
some IO pins go with a commercial product which is very easy to use, I
totally disagree that GCC is bad documented, no support,...and things
like you wrote. For sure you don't know GCC world enough to comment like

this. I don't want to go further with this bar discussion but
inform/teach yourself a little bit about GCC/Gdb/RDI and such things and

you will be pretty surprised how powerful GCC and companion tools are.

And really you don't have to build your own car, because you can get
precompiled packages of GCC. (www.gnuarm.com, www.codesourcery.com) ,
and try to RTFM before comment so hard.

Regards,
marko
