Yup I agree with your basic strategy. If it ain't broke... :-).

The trick to getting interworking right is to use the correct 
libraries and the correct flags.

Some older versions of gcc are a bit broken too. I would not use 
anything before 3.4.1

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
