The 16550 had buffers, but there were bugs that made them unusable. The 16550A was the fixed version. An 16C550 should be fixed, as well. (back when C really meant something different from no character--which generally meant NMOS) So, NMOS 16550 bad. NMOS 16550A good. CMOS 16C550 good.
