There's not enough market for microcontroller with embedded ethernet according to Philips. Who would like to have one at home, anyway? As an example of prototype unfriendly device is LM4921 audio codec from National coming in 20 bump micro smd package and it needs a 4- layer pcb for less than 20 connections (some bumps are NC) Atmel already have SAM7X with embedded ethernet or at least an evaluation board.
