Put an oscilloscope on the line.  That will verify that you have 
signals of the
correct voltage and speed.

After that any number of commercial 485-232 converters or even a handbuilt 
one
will do just fine for monitoring the stream on a PC with a standard serial
capture program (Almost anything is better than hyperterminal).  Al least 
as
long as you are using a standard baud rate.
