Lpc2000

I'm putting a 128k*16 external sram onto an lpc2292. I've set the 
external memory controller for this bank to be 16 bits wide. Does the 
compiler need to know about the width of the external ram bus or does 
the external memory controller look after this ?

I'm using the IAR compiler but am interested in all compiler 
situations
