Our design - smart card reader, based on LPC2104/6, failed with 2-
layer pcb. High voltage spikes (although with proper ESD 
guarding/decoupling on socket/MCU side) sometimes generated processor 
exceptions. 4-layer pcb completely solve this problem.

Similar design (also on '2106), operated inside high electromagneic 
field (RFID reader), is comercially produced on 2-layer pcb, with no 
afford.

So, question - 2 or more layers for LPC, strongly depends of target 
application. My 'home made' LPC starter kit was single layer pcb and 
worked perfectly ...
