I will let you into a little secret of mine. I have been using SPI for over ten years and have never used an SPI peripheral. I have always bit-banged the SPI mastering. I will be changing that for a project I just started though, because I need faster speed. The easiest way to do this is to the data sheet for the device you are talking to and look at the timing diagrams.
