Be aware that external TTL chip has to be powered from +5V. You can use 74HCT versions without any problem. This way you can connect GPIO's only if it is configured as output (connected to 74HCT input), but if you want to use TTL output connected to GPIO configured as input, check if your processor has 5V tolerant inputs.
