Hi! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I haven't found any good info about the UART levels so I better ask! Need to connect a LPC2138 to a Maxim (Dallas) DS2480B which is on 5V. Can they talk as it is or do I need a 3.3 to 5V buffer between? Thanks for any help! Cheers /Johan

Short answer, NO. For any electrical part you can look in the schematics, find the "DC ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS" section, and check the "INPUT HIGH VOLTAGE". In your case it's minimum 3.4V, so the 3.3V output from the LPC2138 won't work. Odd, because most 5V parts have an input high voltage around 2.5V, as it is with most of my parts on my design. --- In lpc2000@yahoogroups.com, "fredrikssonjohan" <johan@s...> wrote:

That Vih,min of 3.4V is for the 1-wire pin. I guess Johan wants to connect the LPC2138 to the RXD and TXD pins which have Vih,min=2.7V, and he should be okay without buffers. Karl Olsen

The 3.4V logic high minimum seems to be on the 1-wire side of the interface. The UART side looks like it has the usual 2.7V minimum logic high. In that case, it should interface with a CMOS 3.3 volt part with no difficulty. -- Dave --- In lpc2000@yahoogroups.com, "seangra" <sgraham@o...> wrote:

Sorry, my bad! 2.7V seems a lot more reasonable for input level. So yes, it should work without a buffer! --- In lpc2000@yahoogroups.com, "derbaier" <dershu@s...> wrote: > > > The 3.4V logic high minimum seems to be on the 1-wire side of the > interface. Not my business but why use the DS-2480? Its code available for 1-Wire/LPC that works perfectly with the use of one pin and a pull up resistor. Hi! The main reason for using it was because it takes care of timings and adjust depending on the load of the 1-wire bus. I use it with a mux and collects data from 8 channels. A normal load is 32pcs of DS1822 on 180 meter cable. Another example is 1200 sensors spread over a 3600 meter of cables muxed to 80 channels. How reliable would you say the bit banged one is when you have bigger loads and longer lines? As said in a later reply, please upload to file area if possible! /Johan PS. Roligt att träffa på fler från Svedala här. :-) --- In lpc2000@yahoogroups.com, "Ake Hedman, eurosource" <akhe@b...> wrote:

We are reading temperatures in silos (bins) mainly with grain but also animal food or other sensitive to heat products. It's 10-90 meter silos with 1-12 cables in each and 1-20 silos and 4-16 sensors per cable. Biggest system as per now is 20 silos, 240 cables and 2400 sensors. All connected with about 8.5km of wire. Just changing from PIC16 to LPC2138 as "heart" of the system. Spent some days just going thrue all data sheets and sometime you just loose focus, as with the UART, to find all specifications and values. Nice system for green houses or other "lighter" use. Our cables are heavy duty, taking a load of 4.5 tons each. As we are mainly in dusty environments we also face the need to meet the ATEX (explosive safe) regulations. We have from a handheld instrument (Windows CE) and a probe that you stick in to the grain to a central computer talking to distributed cards (LPC2138 + DS2480B) via a RS-485 network. 24/7 data collection with unlimited retension of data, alarm triggers individually per sensor / cable, alarm for raising or over temperature, reporting...you name it and it's in there :-) My next step is to add embedded webserver, radio modem, bluetooth and control panel as add-on cards to it. Have yuo considered wireless mesh network nodes as opposed to such long cables? I used to work with 802.15.4 and Zigbee, and that company had a good working solution. I could post the web page if anybody's interested... Fredrik, I'm very interested in sensor networks. Also something I have been working with for many years now and also do at the moment on an open basis in the VSCP project (http://www.vscp.org) aside of my regular consulting work. Very impressing data for your system. You use RS-484. Never though of CAN instead? Nice with distributed control as it solves arbitration and is reliable to a great extent. /Ake Any reason you fredrikssonjohan wrote: > Nice system for green houses or other "lighter" use. CAN bus was thought of but as we needed to interface with an onther RS-485 system it was put in the drawer again. I do am tempted to switch to it as the main bus and in case of old system have a RS-485 doughter card the adopt to them. Will certenly put some time on CAN after this new card is done and maybe change later next year if possible. I'll have a look on the VSCP project also... All products will be on a web site about february next year. Yes, we talked about it in a early stage but as I don't have any knowledge in radio and some customers said that they dont want more radio interferance in their plants made us leave it at that time. The radio module I'm looking at now is for connecting the control room with the plant instead of using up to 500 meter of cable. And if the plant is divided up in two, three groups use radio to make it as one to the control room. But, that will take some study from my side. Seen some nice ready built ones for OEM use with a UART interface to them so maybe I don't need to learn it all myself! Please post the web page if you can. I do like to see it! Have yuo considered wireless mesh network nodes as opposed to such long cables? I used to work with 802.15.4 and Zigbee, and that company had a good working solution. It implements Chris Fox's design per his application note, in fact I believe it may incorporate his firmware. http://www.ibuttonlink.com/ Joel
