Idle mode power consumption

Idle mode power consumption

2004-09-02 by dave_albert

Does anyone know what the power consumption of the LPC210x or 211x is
with the CPU in IDLE mode and only the RTC running? I can only find
figures for active and power down modes, but not idle mode.

Also, how much power could be saved by turning off the PLL and
running from the crystal oscillator directly.

I need to minimize power consumption and wake up periodically to log
data. I'd like to do this without adding additional components as
this is a cost sensitive application.

I observed that when PLL is on, I cannot bring down the power
consumption equal, to that of when Boot loader is running, I wonder
what boot loader is doing (if at all other than sleeping).

But otherwise sleep mode definitely reduces a lot power consumption,
but still not up to mark.

Is it possible for the chip to work properly even if PLL is not used??

Thanks
Yug

Hi Yug,

the device works perfectly well with PLL, just slower. The PLL alone
is probably consuming around 1 mA and with the PLL disabled, the whole
device is slower, so it uses less power in idle mode.
You should also set the VPB-divider to divide the peripheral clock by
4, this will save another couple mAs.

Hope this gets you closer to your target power consumption

Cheers, Bob

Move to quarantaine
