Small JTAG Connector

Small JTAG Connector

2005-03-10 by Richard

I am looking for reccomendations for small JTAG connectors, SMD OK. I
need to find a suitable replacement for the standard Gigantoass 20 pin
header for small products. I realize that I probably only need nine
of those signals.

Richard,

We were facing the same problem, the solution found was: we are gonna use just 7 pins from JTAG through Matrix pins and connectors (1.27). If you are keen to use a SMT module you could find suitable ones at SAMTEC also.

Below the websites:

MATRIX CONNECTORS: http://www.matrixconnector.com/Products32.htm
SAMTEC: www.samtec.com

Hirose makes some tiny connectors with 0.5 mm lead spacing. They are
intended for board-board connection, but that might be an advantage, as you
could use a small PCB for the JTAG connection as an adapter with a larger
standard JTAG connector on it for ribbon cable, making the setup more
reliable than if you had to use tiny wires.

I don't get it?

Are you using the JTAG for production rather than the serial boot loader?

If not, you only need JTAG on the development board - so why bother with a connector.

On the last board I put 7 holes in the board (5 JTAG GND and 3.3v) and for development ran off a few wires to a flying
Gigantoass 20 pin male connector.

If you have a delicate hand with the soldering iron you could probably solder some fine leads directly to the up pins. - rough, but it saves board space (Important for me).

I use an AMP/MOLEX part that comes in 2 - 20 pin versions, through hole
or SMD, low profile, 1.25mm pin spacing. Farnell part number example is
866-088. harwin and Molex parts are listed in farnell. I buy mine from
taiwan.

Hi Richard,

I saw this one at Embedded Systems in Nuremberg last month:

I use a 20 pin MEC8 series connector from SAMTEC. This is a 0.8mm pitch
edge connector.
http://www.samtec.com/signal_integrity/technical_specifications/overview.asp?series=M
EC8
The edge connector on the board only costs some board space, which at approx
6.5mm x 11mm is not to much on most boards.

I just finished small adapter:

If anyone interested, I can send gerbers or protel file for target PCB.
