Milter (greylist): timeout before data read

Milter (greylist): timeout before data read

2004-12-27 by Tony Johansson

Hello,

I'm running milter-greylist-1.6rc1 with libspf_alt-0.4.0 on multiple
RHEL3.0 with sendmail 8.12.11 and bind 9.2.4rc6

I'm seeing lots of entries in maillog like these:
Milter (greylist): timeout before data read
Milter (greylist): to error state

My guess is that sendmail times out waiting for milter-greylist to
complete something, possibly SPF queries?

What can be done to fix or limit these errors?

Regards, Tony

ps: I've seen other milters with timeout values in sendmail.cf but cant
anyting of the like for milter-greylist

You're right.

Raise the timeout.

I took a look at http://www.rhyolite.com/pipermail/dcc/2003/000923.html
and slapped on a ", F=T, T=C:30s;S:5s;R:5s;E:30s" after "Xgreylist,
S=local:/var/milter-greylist/milter-greylist.sock" in sendmail.cf but
that doesnt seem to do make any difference (worse or better) at all.

Care to tell how this should be done?...

/Tony

Yes I did, no difference.
Is this not a problem to any else? If not I guess I should take a look
at speeding up dns-resolution or replace libspf_alt

we have the following in our sendmail.cf:

...list.sock, T=C:5m;S=30s;R=30s;E:5m

seems to work fairly well in conjunction with a script that tails the
logfile, catches repeated failures (usually due to the daemon
crashing...), and restarts milter-greylist.
