Forrest Mims (turned on to it by Stooge Larry - what a wonderful guy).
As
a very novice electronics hobbiest I think I learned more about circuits
in 1 hour of reading this book then the hours I've spent looking at
synth
circuits.  Best of all, it's less than $6US.  (www.radioshack.com).
