Really? The conventional wisdom from my shop days was that particle board was much stronger than an equivalent thickness of plywood, warped less, and had a smoother surface upon which to laminate different coverings. That's why it's used in so much 'cheapie' furniture, bookcases, etc. (okay, it costs less, too).
