I think this came up on SDIY a while back, in context of tightening nuts and not scratching the panel - Ian Fritz iirc said he uses a plastic shopping bag. Thin enough to grip the nut, just thick enough for the driver not to not damage the panel. Same idea would work for protecting nuts wouldn't it?

      It's not just the washers.  The nut and washer are both colored.  Let's 

ask him about it on Muffs.  I bet he paints them.  And if he does, how 

does he tighten the nut without damaging the paint?
