I followed the convention of the MOTM-820. The convention in the US is also up = ON. The question is, what is it that is ON? Since the switch is labelled BYPASS, think of it as BYPASS MODE is ON instead of EFFECT is ON in the up position, if it will help you sleep better nights <heh>. Seriously though, your question was not frivolous. User interface design is very important and I spend a lot of time thinking about it, at work as well as when I lay out my panel designs. However one thing I've learned is that you can never please everybody, because everyone has different perceptions and expectations. So another important guiding principle is to establish UI and labelling conventions, and to be consistant with them across your system. Remember this conversation, all you who want to build Oakley VCOs and VCFs. Tony's layout convention is DIFFERENT than Paul's, and I have to make a decision as to how to lay out the panels.
