Hmmm, looking at the bypass switch.... Is there a convention in the US of 'up is always off' or is it just this small Isle?? (Definitely not a complaint, just out of interest) regards... Keith http://home.freeuk.net/lowpass

In my experience, up is on.

Yes, if it's labeled "Bypass," then up would be the labeled condition. If it's labeled "Enable" or "On," then 'off' would be the down position. Does that make any sense...?

Not on the lightswitch in my studio. :) Of course, every other switch in the house is up=on. On the other hand, in this case, when the switch is down, the delay is in-circuit, or on. So that follows down=on. --PBr

I followed the convention of the MOTM-820. The convention in the US is also up = ON. The question is, what is it that is ON? Since the switch is labelled BYPASS, think of it as BYPASS MODE is ON instead of EFFECT is ON in the up position, if it will help you sleep better nights <heh>. Seriously though, your question was not frivolous. User interface design is very important and I spend a lot of time thinking about it, at work as well as when I lay out my panel designs. However one thing I've learned is that you can never please everybody, because everyone has different perceptions and expectations. So another important guiding principle is to establish UI and labelling conventions, and to be consistant with them across your system. Remember this conversation, all you who want to build Oakley VCOs and VCFs. Tony's layout convention is DIFFERENT than Paul's, and I have to make a decision as to how to lay out the panels. I will be asking for feedback later on that issue. Moe Dave's Hot Rod MOTM Shop http://www.users.qwest.net/~daveb2 --- In motm@y..., keithw@c... wrote:

Yeah. This is why many (including me) find it a bit counterintuitive to have controls labeled for a "negative" condition. I prefer a switch named "Enable/On" to one marked "Bypass/Off/Defeat," in order to circumnavigate that obfuscation. <g>

This is for everyone that requested their UEG(s) without the manual. They have been shipped! (yeah) I also wanted to inform you that your receipt is underneath the UPS label in the clear bag. In-Reply-To: <memo.884884@...> This seems to have caused some conversation, I will explain..... My Father was an electrical contractor and I helped out on many occasions. The convention with electrical wireing in the UK is always UP = OFF I can go round my house this evening and all light switches are off in the up position. This is entirely academic, there are no complaints, I just wondered if this was a universal convention and how much of the globe this encompassed. Keith (amazed that he can type encompassed after the night in the pub!) http://home.freeuk.net/lowpass
