What's the approx. cost of a custom one off schaefer panel + silkscreening? For example, a 2U panel for 6 knobs, 6 jacks. Just looking for a ballpark price. $20? $60? $100? What type of turnaround time could someone expect? 2 weeks? 2 months? Thanks, John

Currently I have 3 panels on order from Schaeffer, and price quotes from Kai Schaeffer are (rounded) [recalling from memory]: Oakley multiladder, 2U motm dimensions, 7 knobs, 10 sockets:47 dm (about $20 usd) Blacet eg1, 2U, 6 knobs, 9 sockets, 2 leds, one pushbutton, one switch:46 dm (about $20 usd) Oakley 410,1U, 3 knobs, 8 sockets: 30 dm If you would like, I can let you know what the actual costs are when I receive the bill. These, of course, do not have the detail that the motm (or Hendry/Bradley) panels have, principally no tick marks around the knobs. Panel black paint is not 'raised' as on the motm panels. Panels look reasonably well with a variety of other panels, but of course, will visually be different placed beside other "true to motm" panels. Panel edges are not painted, but are not noticable when the panel is between other panels. I prefer the motm panels from Paul S. or Hendry/Bradley, but the Schaeffer panels are well done (admittedly this is based on one panel that I have from Schaeffer) and a lot nicer (and more functional, e.g., socket labels) than the bare panels that I currently have for some diy modules. > > What type of turnaround time could someone expect? 2 weeks? 2 > months? Shipping for the above 3 panels is quoted as about 55dm ($26). I've only had one previous panel done by Schaeffer - from the time I sent the .fpd file to receiving the panel it was about 3.5 weeks (I live in Kansas USA). It was a 1U custom panel (with 2 Oakley little lfo's on it) - panel was nicely done with everything correctly done according to the .fpd file that I sent them. HOpe this helps a bit, Jeff

Thanks for your response, Jeff. Yes, helps a lot. The prices seem fairly reasonable. Is there a reason the Schaeffer panels don't have tick marks around the knobs? I noticed this on the Oakley website and figured someone left them off on purpose. I assumed you could just add them through the Schaeffer front panel designer app. Is this just a matter of preference/cost or does Schaeffer not offer this? How about the paint? Does Schaeffer not offer the powder paint as used on the MOTM modules? Again, is this just a matter of preference/cost? Thanks, John

You can add tick marks to the Schaeffer panels, but it costs extra. As I recall they charge you per line segment, so it can quickly add 20-50% to the panel cost. The possibility of custom Stooge MOTM panels for DIYers was mentioned some time ago. However, unless you make several of the same panel the cost would be prohibitive. I think the onetime setup fee was around $80-$100. Best thing to do would be to design a really nice circuit that the rest of us would want to build on one of Paul's DIY boards so you could get more panels in the order. :-) John Loffink microtonal@... ----- Original Message -----

MOTM panels are NOT powder paint. The brackets and rails are. However, powder coat textures do not come even close to the appearance of MOTM panels. To match the MOTM finish, you must use a wet paint. As Paul has pointed out before it is a Sherwin Williams paint called Polane. To offer you a few more details, it is Polate-T. It requires the use of a catalyst and reducer. SW recommends a primer. It requires a catalyst / reducer (different of course). So, for one gallon of paint coverage, be prepared for just a tad over $200. However, I have to applaud Paul's choice. That is the toughest paint I have ever seen for metal. Larry Hendry

I have created front panels where it would add 200% to the panel cost. (;->) But - it's all just a question of negotiation. I'm normally filling my panels with tick marks and numbers and graphics made from "I" letters in various sizes, ignore the automatically calculated price, and ask Mr. Schaeffer for a manually calculated offer. Take a look at http://home.debitel.net/user/jhaible/jh_storm_tide_front.gif . It's a screen shot of Frontplattendesigner (just the knobs and buttons are colorated afterwards). The long lines are all "I"s from the standard font. I don't have the invoice right here, but I think it was below 100 Dollars. JH.
