As John described, it would be nice to have the functionality of 2 420's
(I opt out here since I don't have a 420 but do have an MS20, and
another part of my reluctance to purchase a 420 is that I've not found
notch filters all that useful).

As an alternative would it be possible to mod the 420 with a switch (and
whatever else necessary) to run the signal into the HPF and then into the
LPF when the 420 Mode switch is set to HPF? One would still have one
freq and one resonance pot, however.

[Or is this just another one of my dumb questions/comments?]

That's a neat idea, although I think that the lack of separate freq and res pots would be a pretty big loss. I have an MS20 and one 420 that I chain with a 440 for MS-esque sounds. Having separate control over the two frequency ranges is pretty important, otherwise you'd get a pretty static filter sound. It could still be useful, though. It's also helpful to be able to set the amount of Fc response to CV for each filter, to fine tune the sound if you're controlling the Fc with an external source.

I have found this scenario to work reasonably well, although it doesn't
sound like two 420s. The 440s LP slope somewhat limits the "character" of
the 420 to come through, however, the VC resonance really adds additional
expressiveness. I like this setup with the notch filter engaged on the 420
with the resonance set high - it adds more flavor to the sound of the 440.

Now, it would be simply *awesome* if there was a mod to the 420 to allow for
VC resonance!

From looking inside my Frostwave, it looks like the VC resonance is
accomplished with an LED/LDR combo. You can actually see the light change
with the incoming voltage.

If you want to emulate a SH-5 filter configuration (which is pretty
impressive
IMO), that would be 420 in HP mode without resonance into 440, and parallel
to this chain, a SEM-style filter (does it have a number yet?) in BPF mode.
420 and 440's CVs linked together, and SEM BPF manual only (;->)
(Not a 100% emulation, of course, similar.)
