spider babies :O

spider babies :O

2001-08-24 by josephcasbarian@email.com

Last night I discoverd a nursery of tiny arachnids in my open-backed
synth enclosure. I'm planning a nice cabinet with the help of Larry's
rails, but I'm unsure about the back. I was going to cover the back
with a wooden panel, or do I need more ventilation?

thanks,
joseph casbarian

-and if your concerned about the welfare of the spiders, don't worry,
only a few were smashed. I think Mommy flew the coop before I could
get her.

I aspire to one day have a case large enough to house a family of
fruit bats.

I use the very thin plywood used on 'hollow-core' doors. It's a 1/16th, I'll
guess.

I used 3/16" birch plywood for my back panel. That's thick enough to drill
holes through so I could attach the back using screws instead of nails. I
can see back access being useful now and then, especially once the front
gets filled up. The back panel screws are attached to small blocks of solid
oak. With the right size pilot hole these blocks will easily last 50 cycles
or more of screw insertion and removal.

You don't need any ventilation. There's enough holes through the jacks to
let any heat escape.

Is it necessary, recommended or not necessary to have back panels on
cabinets? At the moment, mine do not have back panels, and cabinets are
located in a fairly dust free, minimal traffic area.

But what happens when all of the jacks have patch cords plugged into
them?

Fruit bats have very good hearing. Perhaps you could train them to work as
engineers.

That's OK :) I hear Larry is renting his rack out to Japanese businessmen
-- it's cheaper than a hotel.

Careful what you patch, though, they might get the wrong idea ... :>
