I hate to be the bearer of bad news....errr...but Stooge Larry swapped VR1 and VR4. VR4 is the
148 pot!

Other than THAT, nice shots.

New MOTM-310 pages at wise guy synth

2002-02-10 by J. Larry Hendry

I have added new construction photos for the MOTM-310 module at:
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/motm/310/310.htm

I have added a modification page for the 310 module to change the fine tune
range from 8 semitones to about 4 semitones to match the similar
modification I did to all my MOTM-300s.

All pages are linked from the normal menus also.

Thanks Paul. Crap. That's what happens when you try to spend too much time
worry about the photos and stuff.
Stooge Larry (now where did I put that desoldering iron ???)

RE: [motm] Pots (was New MOTM-310 pages at wise guy synth)

Pot education!

What’s the difference between the 148 and 149 other then one is cermet? Why choose one over the other, if they are the same value wouldn’t they operate the same?

Looking at Dave’s Hot Rod parts list Dave chooses Bourns over Spectrol for plastic and then Spectrol over Bourns for Cermet? Paul tends to use Spectrol when mounting to the PC and then tends to use the Bourns for non-mounted, coincidence or is there a science to selecting pots?

For my MiniWave I used Spectrol 149’s and they work just fine. I’m about to order 149’s for my Dark Star, should I maybe put more thought into this or go with Dave’ recommended Bourns? Or does it boil down to cost since the Spectrol’s cost a little more?

Just Curious

Al

Al,

At one time I was curious about this as well, so I did a little digging and
here's what I found:

Spectrol 148 Conductive Plastic:
+-20% tolerance, 100,000 rotations
half as noisy as the 149
wider available resistance ranges

Spectrol 149 Cermet:
+-10% tolerance, 50,000 rotations
handles twice the power of the 148
more temp stable & can handle higher temp

BTW: mouser.com lists these as the same price.
