Nice, cheap pots

Nice, cheap pots

2002-05-30 by J. Larry Hendry

I just found these nice cheap pots. They are nice if you have a project
where you can tolerate a 300K linear pot, or perhaps want to use an add-on
resistor to get a smaller value, simulated log taper:

Bournes part # 53AAAB28B40, 300K linear sealed conductive plastic, 50K
rotation life This is not a PCB mount, but has solder lugs for wire
connections instead. Metal 1/4" diameter shaft 7/8" inch long with metal
3/8" bushing 1/2" x 1/2 inch square body (i.e. all standard stuff)

These are begin sold at Goldmine Electronics for 4 for $1, 100 for $20, or
1000 for $180.

I just got a bag for 100 and they feel very nice (like all the $5 each
Bourns pots I have). No excuses for not doing that DIY sequencer now, huh?

*SIGH* I just spent nearly $50 on 6 50K pots from Mouser...

Buyer beware!

That sounds to good to be without a "gotcha".

For instance, does the pot actually go to zero ohms....?

Yes, I thought it was too good to be true too. But, from the things I am
seeing on the surplus market, it looks like Bourns may be dumping some NOS
on the market through surplus dealers because they are not popular sellers.
For example, last month I scored 51 series, PCB mount 50Kohm conductive
plastic from All Electronics for $1 each. They are very nice but, the shaft
is shorter than normal. It is still plenty long for the knobs we are using,
but probably was not a big seller. The accountants can show you how it is
cheaper to throw away stuff that does not sell than to keep it around for
years in inventory. We have all seen evidence of that in our own workplaces.
I expect Bourns is doing some house cleaning. The date codes on my 300Ks
are 1997 and 1991 on my 50Ks.

I do appreciate your tip John. So, I pulled out some of the ones I bought
and checked them. Typically 2 or 3 ohms at each end leftover at full
rotation. Not exactly zero, but darn close on a 300K pot. They will be
fine for my planned application.
