Frequency Shifter?

Frequency Shifter?

2002-12-12 by Tentochi

Well, if we are never going to see a 3rd party
frequency shifter, I hope it is in the queue for Paul.

Well, Tony K. told us we would have to wait for the
Surface One to be finished. I just saw the president
of M Audio (Formerly MIDIMan?), Tim Ryan, with a
Surface One on page 116 of the December 2002 issue of
Sound on Sound. It sure looks like it is finished.
Does anyone know if Tony still even plans on doing a
frequency shifter???

Is this the death of Encore Electronics? Tony has not
done (to my knowledge) a second run of the popular
UEG. He has not done the promised revised firmware
foe the Expressionist. And as Paul said earlier, he
doesn't have any plans currently of doing the
Expressionist II.

It would be GREAT if Tony could step up to the plate
and knock some of this out. He has lots of people out
here (including myself) that want to send him their
hard-earned money.

If not Tony or Paul, is there someone else that can
step up to the task?

Cheers!
Shemp

Not to speak for Tony,

but it is his "Design" skills that keep him away from the Encore products. I
saw a few Surface Ones at NAMM last year and they looked fine and running,
but are they released yet? No. This thing is so filled with bugs from the
Tactex (my impression only) that it has taken far longer than expected to
work the kinks out. The new Moog Voyager has ditched the tactex and used and
old method of Bob's due to all the problems they had (hence the year delay
in release similiar to the surface one). I'm sure Tony is more than on top
of things and you should maybe have a little bit of faith in such a talented
designer and his obviously established products. (especially after how long
the OMS-410 kits took my friend). Tony, see you at NAMM?

It's not finished. It's working, it's doing a lot of things, it's been
demoed a lot, but it's not finished. Here I am at 11:37PM just ending my
workday that started at 8AM. I'm damn tired, and I just don't have the
bandwidth to do anything else for the next month or so. (on top of that,
there is major construction going on here, and that has invaded my time
and space too)

Yes yes yes yes, the frequency shifter WILL BE COMPLETED. Many people
have offered to pay ahead, but I don't want to have the problem of
people getting mad with me sitting on their money for some indeterminate
amount of time until it's actually ready. I will let everyone know with
either website updates or emails to this list when progress has been
made, but please don't assume anything in the queue has been ejected.
It's simply still in the queue.

When I sell out of the first run, I'll think about doing a second run.
There is no point in me tying up thousands of dollars in inventory
sitting around here collecting 'dust'

I haven't seen what Paul said, so I cannot make comments on the accuracy
of his quote, but I can tell you I never told him I didn't have plans on
doing the Expressionist II. I don't have a timeframe. The two are very
different. What good would it be to pile an inaccurate timeframe on a
series of activities which are all requiring somewhat unknown amounts of
time, and they are all being delayed by a project that is grossly
delayed itself?? See the time snowball?

I've been standing at the plate all day in the hot sun naked, and would
like to sit down. :)
I would love to accept the money, but I want to be able to deliver after
that point in a reasonably short period of time.

I appreciate your ongoing interest in the things I'm working on...that's
one thing that keeps the motivation to do it even after grinding through
the path I've been on the past year+.

Best regards,
Tony

Hi Thomas,

Well if someone is going to speak for me, you do a pretty good job with
an unusual level of insight.

This Tactex based product has been one of bigger challenges of my
career, and is complicated on many levels. (Give me an Oasys style pack
of DSPs any day!)

I have read many books on engineering embedded systems, and this project
seems to highlight many areas of what can go wrong, will go wrong. I've
learned a lot about the product, and it's those 'kinks' (not only from
the surface technology, but in several areas of the design and the
components used, AND the development tools) that have caused such gross
delays.

Yeah you're right, Bob did pull away from it because it was too extreme
of a challenge for his requirements/manpower/etc. I'm not saying he has
bad engineers, but more like he couldn't allocate his resources to that
problem. (I'm just guessing because I don't know that first hand)

Regarding NAMM, I haven't determined if I'll be there or not. I'll be
working my tail off until the 11th hour, and after that I might just go
into a coma for a week or so. ;)

Excellent! I know that there are many of us out here
(myself included) that would help out in anyway you
might need. Just ask.

My mistake!!! Sorry. The UEG is excellent, so I
thought it had sold out. Heartily recommended!

OK. I had misunderstood what Paul had said I think.
Again, my mistake. I can't find the original right
now. I guess it was something more like the
Expressionist II isn't coming out right now.

I am glad I haven't been at the ballfield to see that.
Be careful where you sit if the tender areas are
sunburnt! <g>
