Tek 500 Series

Tek 500 Series

2005-03-23 by Paul Schreiber

When they came out (mid-70s) they were *way* overpriced. They tried to make too
much $$$ of the rack+power supply (errr...Doepfer?) which cost them dearly. The
modules were designed by Dr. Richard Cabot, who left and founded Audio
Precision. I think that for eBay prices, they are a good value. Yes, any
1970s-80s DVM will need a calibration (about $80).

The mini-scope module is cool, as is the function generator.

I lusted after this stuff in college :)

Hmm.

Doepfer G6 rack w/PS - $450

Equivalent MOTM rails w/PS - $415

:shrugs:

Wait, I forgot to include an extra power distro board. That brings
the MOTM total to $452.

So, you see...

...and it's still not a full enclosure. I wish I knew more about getting
enclosures and sheetmetal folded because I would love an enclosed sub rack
for 5 space MOTM modules.

Could you use the Stooge SKB backs for that? Larry?

Regarding Doepfer to MOTM price comparisons, I think the point was that MOTM
power supplies and racks aren't very expensive as a percentage of overall
system cost. MOTM modules aren't cheap but the accessories are quite
inexpensive.

Some of the comparisons here were about the same as comparing the price of a
Kia to a BMW.

I would be curious to know who went with a MOTM system because they
were scared off by the cost of the Doepfer rack and powersupply. Also
I would be curious to know who went with MOTM because they wanted a
Modular and was on a budget? Is it possible to get a modular system
on a Budget? You know, they make "Plugins" for those that are worried
about the cost of a powersupply and mouting rails...

I Agree,
my questions were ment to be retorical... There is
no way to make a modular on a budget.

--- I went with MOTM because of the Kits. I am not a
musician, I like all of the knobs and plugs and blinky
lights and NOISE.
I am very satisfied with everything I have bought from
Paul. I cant imagine what goes through his mind. To
me he is a genuis. I have purchased other modules on
ebay and used items, Pauls are the best.

Keep up the good work Paul.

Being relatively new to modulars it would be nice to
see some patch diagrams from the guru's on the list...

Larry's SKB backs are close, but I was thinking something a little more
cynthia like. It was just a little afternoon wishful thinking. What I
really need to do is find a welder/cabinet maker out here who can build my
rack design for me. Right now I'm using telcom switch rack, which works
great, but is ugly as sin ;)

Very nice ones:
http://www.arturia.com/
http://www.wayoutware.com/ (this one is awesome!))
http://www.nativeinstruments.de/
http://www.clavia.com

but seriously, i love my patch cables and knobs. my mouse just doesn't
make that satisfying "thunk" when I try and cram the USB plug into a
jack. i can't even remember why I chose MOTM over doepfer so long ago.
I've met both Paul & Dieter, and they're both very nice guys. I think it
was the quality of the demo sounds on Pauls page, the knob-to-knob
spacing, and Paul's cunning collection of carefully crafted circuits. It
sure as hell wasn't the price.

It's been I think two years since I started so I'm hardly an expert or
anything. I remember asking this exact same question. My advice is this:
start with a small number of modules (say OSC->(ENV->)VCA->VCF->MIX) and
just play, try using unusual outputs on unusual inputs. Try "missusing" or
"abusing" modules, like using a filter as an oscillator, or an LFO with
re-trig as an envelop. You'll start to get a model in your head how to
design your own sounds. Just remember to play ;)

That's the key!!! Leave the tradional paths of non-modular synths.
Put a Filter into modulation paths, etc.pp.

Play! Play! ;-)

In the Files section there's a folder called Patch Journal. It has
one patch in it :( I thought If I seeded it, more folks would add to
it. But that one patch is very cool if you're interested in
Microsounds and Granular Synthesis...
